Right then, that’s it from the 1st ODI of the 3-match series with New Zealand winning it by 44 runs. The action keeps coming thick and fast as the 2nd ODI of this series will be played on 20th Dec 2023, 3.30 am IST (10 pm GMT, previous day). You can join us an hour early for the build-up as well. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
Will Young is the player of the match for his brilliant knock of 105 from 84 deliveries and the work he did in the field with 2 catches.
Earlier in the day, after being asked to bat first the hosts lost a couple of wickets early on but a solid 3rd wicket partnership between Will Young and skipper Tom Latham of 171 in just 145 deliveries played a key role in the hosts posting this total and getting out of a tricky situation. Will Young scored a century and eventually got out on 105 while Tom Latham scored 92. Mark Chapman played a good cameo of 20 runs from 11 deliveries only. The bowling from the hosts was good to start with but the rain stoppage did not go in their favor as they lost their momentum and leaked runs in abundance. Shoriful Islam picked up a couple and Mehidy Hasan took a wicket rest all went wicketless.
The bowling from the Kiwis was spot on as they kept taking wickets regularly without letting the batter get into their grooves. Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, and Josh Clarkson took a couple while others chipped in with wickets as well. New Zealand leads the 3-match ODI series 1-0.
Chasing down 245 the visitors got off to a sloppy start as they lost Soumya Sarkar in the first over itself. The Kiwis bowled well and kept on taking wickets at regular intervals. A few batters did get starts but couldn't go on to make a big one or a significant contribution. Anamul Haque played a good hand of 43 while Afif Hossain played a handy cameo of 38 runs but in a losing cause.
A brilliant century by Will Young and a solid knock of 92 by the skipper Tom Latham has helped the Kiwis win the first ODI by 44 runs. A really convincing victory for the hosts in the end.

Mahmud swings across the line and he misses this as the ball rattles into the stumps. A terrific win for the Black Caps who get an early lead in the series.
